Canelo vs UFC 306 in September: what did the Mexican boxer say?

The boxer will fight Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas on 14 September, but that weekend the UFC will take one of his biggest cards to ‘The Sphere’.

Combat sports fans will enjoy a great weekend of action in about one month, as in the September 14-15 weekend Saul Alvarez will return to the ring to take on Edgar Berlanga and the UFC will head to The Sphere, in Vegas, for one of its most stacked cards of the year.

Canelo will defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against the dangerous and undefeated Brooklyn native at T-Mobile Arena, also in Sin City.

Alvarez, who will be in his 66th pro fight, recently warned his opponent about a knockout finish after both fighters exchanged some words in their second pre-fight press conference.

What did Canelo say about UFC 306 taking place the same night?

Canelo is one of the biggest boxing names in recent times and he has made large amounts of money over the years every time he entered the ring.

The 34-year-old superstar and his team decided not to take on Terence Crawford or David Benavidez, as no $200 million offer came, and decided to choose the more unexperienced Berlanga to take on next, something many fans have criticized.

Asked about how he feels about sharing his event with the UFC card on the same night, Canelo didn’t seem very bothered.

“It’s just different. Maybe other boxing matches, maybe, but Canelo is different. There are other kinds of fights, but Canelo is just different. I don’t care if the UFC is there when Canelo fights, it’s different”, he said in an interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game.

He also talked about his decision to choose Berlanga as his next rival and not Crawford or Benavidez, who are seen as real threats.

“Look, at some point, all the fighters did what they were told. De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, Julio Cesar Chavez, Mike Tyson, everybody did this. There are stars and superstars and they made the championship, not the championship made them. So it’s way different”, he stated.

“I come and I do my career and I fight with Cotto with a clause, and I fight with Mayweather with a clause, and I fight with everybody to build the Canelo Alvarez I am. Right now I can do whatever I want”, Canelo added.

Alvarez is expected to emerge victorious against Berlanga due to his boxing IQ and vast experience in the ring. He will take home $65 million for taking on the American.
