The PGA Tour has made its fourth and final stop in Texas this season for the Charles Schwab Challenge, which began yesterday at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth with the action running through to Sunday’s final round. Many eyes were on current world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, one of the obvious favourites competing for the overall purse of $9.1 million, with the winner set to pocket $1.638 million. But he was to have a tough opening day.

Hoffman leads Charles Schwab Challenge after Day 1

It is Charley Hoffman who sits atop the leaderboard after a bogey-free, 5-under 65 in the first round. The 47-year-old made an impressive start, birdieing two of his first three holes at Colonial Country Club, despite limited scoring opportunities. Hoffman, who has four PGA Tour victories but none since 2016, has a one-shot lead over five golfers tied for second place and he was feeling confident about his form after the round.

Brian Harman, Tony Finau, Davis Riley, S.H. Kim, and Martin Laird all posted 4-under 66 rounds. Harman, the 2023 Open Championship winner, made all his birdies in his first eight holes. Finau’s round included a 56-foot birdie putt on his opening hole.

Other notable performances included Hayden Buckley, Pierceson Coody, Robby Shelton, and Callum Tarren, who each shot 3-under 67. Collin Morikawa, fresh off a near-miss at the PGA Championship, recorded a 2-under 68.

So, back to Scheffler’s struggles. He finished with a 2-over 72 after a triple bogey on the 13th hole and now faces a challenge to make the cut, currently tied for 79th. The competition continues as players aim to secure their positions going into the weekend, so let’s check out those second round timings and groups.
