The man who just can’t stay retired is at it again. Floyd Mayweather will step into the ring for yet another exhibition bout. On May 14th, he will face a former sparring partner, Don Moore, on the Burj Al Arab hotel helipad in Dubai.

Known as perhaps the greatest defensive fighter who ever lived, Floyd is a former Olympic bronze medallist and through his career, he faced the toughest fighters out there. Defeating Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, and Ricky Hatton, his career was not without controversy. Often accused of cherry-picking his fights to catch rising greats too soon or when they were already on the slide. He was widely seen as having ducked a prime Manny Pacquiao when he beat the former great in 2015. Floyd left the game with a perfect, if manicured, 49-0 record.

But he couldn’t stay out for long. Risking not only his legacy but also what remained of his reputation, he took a series of bizarre, though lucrative, bouts. In 2017, Mayweather returned to the ring to face MMA bad boy Conor Macgregor in his pro-boxing debut. In a fight full of rabbit-punches and illegal hits by the Irish MMA star, Mayweather cruised to an easy TKO to officially finish his professional career at an even 50 wins, no losses. Perhaps even Pretty Boy, who by now was going by the moniker Money, realized that this type of cynical record-massaging was too much for fight fans to take. He continued to fight a string of non-boxers but never again in an official capacity.

After his much-derided exhibition agains YouTuber Logan Paul last year, it seemed as if perhaps the circus act had come to its final, humiliating conclusion, and Mayweather has returned to boxing a boxer.

Don Moore has a less eye-catching record than Floyd, but at the very least was a professional boxer. Trained by the late Roger Mayweather, he had a career that was mostly about helping other fighters along their road. A long-time sparring partner to Floyd Mayweather, Moore retired in 2016 after knocking out DeShaun Williams with an 18-0-1 record.
