2022 French Open men’s singles final: preview

Rafa Nadal can further cement his status as the most successful player ever in men’s tennis when he takes on Casper Ruud in the French Open final.

The Spaniard can claim his 22nd men’s Grand Slam singles title on Sunday, having surpassed Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at the top of the all-time leader board with his Australian Open victory in January.

13-time French Open champion Nadal, who has never lost a final at Roland Garros, progressed to the tournament decider after semi-final opponent Alexander Zverev had to retire hurt on Friday.

Nadal, 36, was one set up on Zverev when the German injured his ankle with the second set level at 6-6.

While Nadal is into the 14th French Open final of his career, Norway’s Ruud will be making his first appearance at this stage of a Grand Slam.

The 23-year-old beat Croatia’s Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals.
