While the financial rewards of winning the Kentucky Derby can be very high for owners, so too are the costs of entering a horse in the historic race, whose 152nd edition is set to be held this weekend at Churchill Downs.

How much does it cost to buy a Kentucky Derby race horse?

The first step toward Kentucky Derby success is, clearly, buying a horse. This horse must also meet strict eligibility rules: only Thoroughbreds that are three years old at the time of the race can enter. That purchase typically lands in the six-figure range, but can climb far higher.

The bookmakers’ favorite for the 2026 Kentucky Derby, Renegade, was bought by its co-owners, Robert and Lawana Low and Mike Repole’s Repole Stable, for $975,000 in 2024.

However, it is not essential to spend close to or above a million dollars to own a Derby winner. Mage, which triumphed in 2023, was purchased for a comparatively modest $290,000.

Among the 2026 participants whose sale prices are listed by Kentucky Derby organizers, the average purchase cost for non-homebred horses is just under $500,000. That is up slightly from 2025, when the average auction price was just below $450,000.

The most expensive entrant in the 2026 field is Potente, which cost Speedway Stables LLC a reported $2.4 million. At the other end of the scale, Ashley Durr, Anthony Tate and Front Page Equestrian, LLC paid just $12,000 for Ocelli.

Per KentuckyDerby.com, Potente is 23/1 to win in Louisville, while Ocelli is priced at 50/1.

How much does it cost to run a race horse?

According to an estimate by NBC’s Mary Omatiga, the cost of maintaining a race horse, including food, training and medical expenses, is around $50,000 per year.

Omatiga also calculates the cost of entering qualifying races for the Kentucky Derby, plus transportation to and from these events, at about $175,000.

Finally, if a horse qualifies for the Kentucky Derby, for which just 20 spots are available, Churchill Downs charges a widely reported $50,000 for participation. That includes a $25,000 entry fee and a $25,000 starting fee.

How much is the Kentucky Derby prize money?

Owners do have the opportunity to earn a sizeable prize check if their horse wins the Derby, a race often called “the greatest two minutes in sports.” Since 2024, the total purse has been $5 million.

Per The Athletic’s Andrew DeWitt and Drew Jordan, only the Breeders’ Cup Classic, held at rotating venues each November, has a larger purse among American races at $7 million.

Of the $5 million purse at the 2024 and 2025 Derbies, $3.1 million went to the winner. According to a breakdown by racing expert Keeler Johnson, the owner typically receives 80 percent of the payout, with 10 percent going to the jockey and 10 percent to the trainer.

Winning the Kentucky Derby can also significantly increase a horse’s value at auction. A month after winning in 2000, Fusaichi Pegasus was sold for a world record $70 million, nearly 20 times its original purchase price.
