Iga Świątek has capped her sterling performance this season with a victory at the last Grand Slam event of the year. She held off Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to win the US Open for the first time.

The 21-year-old’s triumph made her the first Polish woman to win the tournament, and the first woman to win two major trophies in one year since Angelique Kerber of Germany won both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2016. Swiatek won the French Open earlier this year.

Swiatek cements place at the top

Clinching the US Open title also secures Swiatek’s spot at the top of the WTA world rankings. She was the number one women’s player as she headed to Flushing Meadows, and she leaves firmly in the same place.

Ons Labeur, meanwhile, was ranked number five before the New York tournament, and she will become second in the world when the WTA announces its rankings on Monday. Both ATP and WTA ranking lists are generally released on this day, except in the middle week of the four Grand Slam tournaments or the ATP and WTA competitions in Miami and Indian Wells.

Anett Kontaveit will slip one place from second to third, and so will Maria Sakkari who will go down to number four from number three, now tied with Aryna Sabalenka who went up because of her semifinal finish. Next is Paula Badosa who slid down as well, followed by American Jessica Pegula, who went up due to reaching the quarterfinals. Coco Gauff is now in the top ten, also due to her performance at the US Open.
