World number one Iga Swiatek continued her winning ways and overwhelmed Ons Jabeur at the US Open final to become the first Polish woman to win the tournament.

It was the second Grand Slam title of the year for the 21-year-old, who won the French Open in June.

Swiatek showed mastery from the beginning, exhibiting the form that made her the top women’s player in the world. She stopped whatever momentum Jabeur was able to muster, ending the first set quickly.

The Tunisian fought back in the second set and managed to win six games, but Swiatek eventually prevailed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Her latest trophy brings her grand slam title haul to three. Her first major trophy came in 2022 at the French Open, where she handily defeated American Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1.

The second came in June this year after she dominated another American, Coco Gauff, 6-1, 6-3, also at the French Open.

A banner year for Swiatek

Swiatek has had an amazing run this year, going on a 37-match winning streak, and winning all seven of the finals that she played this season.

Meanwhile, Jabeur is the first Arab and African woman to reach a US Open final, just missing the chance to become the first one to win it. But she will get to improve her position from her current number five to number two in the next WTA ranking after her performance at Flushing Meadows.

The US Open will wrap up on Sunday with the men’s final match between Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud, where a brand new tournament winner will be crowned.
