The 2022 US Open signalled the end of an era, featuring the final performance of one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Serena Williams thrilled fans for the last time in a tournament that she reigned over during her outstanding career. She ended up saying goodbye on court in the third round, after a 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 loss to Ajla Tomljanovic.

The 40-year-old began her professional tennis life in 1995 at the early age of 14, entering as a wild-card to get around age-eligibility rules. From then on, her rise to the top was unstoppable, and in 1999, she won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open at the age of 17.

Serena Williams: most grand slam trophies

She proceeded to reap victories at major events relentlessly, and currently, Williams holds the record for winning the most Grand Slam singles titles in the open era, with trophies from 23 tournaments.

She won six of these championships at the US Open, which is the highest number titles won by any player in the modern era. She shares this record with fellow American Chris Evert.

Williams also holds the record for largest number of wins at the Australian Open in the open era. No current player comes close to her record of seven championship victories (Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Naomi Osaka of Japan are at second place with two each), making it likely that her tally will remain unchallenged for quite a few years to come.

The American also won seven times at Wimbledon, second only to Martina Navratilova’s nine. Williams shares the number two spot with Steffi Graf.

Williams tops off her list of Grand Slam victories in singles with three French Open titles.
