Update:

Austrian Sepp Straka earned just over $1.5 million in prize money after taking victory at The American Express tournament this weekend.

On Sunday, Straka finished two shots clear on PGA West’s Pete Dye Stadium Course to claim the largest cut of the $8.8 million prize purse in La Quinta, California.

After a final round of 70, the 31-year-old ended up on 25 under par, with the US’s Justin Thomas taking second after finishing on 23 under with a round of 66 on Sunday.

One stroke behind Thomas, two men were left in a tie for third place: American Justin Lower and Australia’s Jason Day.

How much did Straka earn for winning the American Express?

Straka, who had never previously won the Desert Classic - an event currently known as the American Express for sponsorship reasons - will take home a check for $1.584 million. He will also be awarded 500 FedEx Cup points for what is the third PGA Tour title of his career.

Thomas pocketed $959,200 in prize money for his second-placed finish, and Lower and Day each earned $519,200 for completing the podium.

Straka almost joins historic PGA Tour club

As noted by Golf.com’s Josh Schrock, Straka came close to adding his name to an exclusive PGA Tour club on Sunday. Up until the 16th hole of the final round, the Vienna native had lasted the entire American Express tournament without a single bogey.

However, he failed to meet par on two of the last three holes at PGA West, missing the chance to become only the fourth player ever to enjoy a bogey-free 72 holes at a PGA Tour stroke-play event.

The three players who have achieved the feat, per Schrock, are: Lee Trivino (at the 1974 Greater New Orleans Open), J.T. Poston (2019 Wyndham Championship) and Tom Kim (2022 Shriners Children’s Open)

What is the next tournament on the PGA Tour calendar?

The next event on the schedule is the Farmers Insurance Open, which is to be played in San Diego, California, from January 22 to 25. Matsuyama Hideki and Ludvig Aberg, the world Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, are the highest-ranked players in the field at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
