When golfers take to the course in Las Vegas on Thursday, there will be one amongst them who deserves a special nod. Indeed, her participation in this year’s edition of the Shriners Children’s Open is as exciting as it is historic.

A bit about the Shriners Children’s Open

With FedExCup points at stake, the Shriners Children’s Open is definitely a tournament to watch on the golf calendar as some of the world’s top golfers will be present. The tournament is held annually in Las Vegas at the TPC Summerlin, a course that has bee honored by Golf Digest magazine as “One of America’s Best Golf Courses.” Since its establishment in 1983, the event has raised funds for the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Where the course itself is concerned, the TPC Summerlin was designed as a par 71, measuring 7,255 yards. Highly regarded around the golf world, the course has several water features that add to the game’s challenge. The lush bentgrass greens provide a smooth surface for putting and add to the overall aesthetic of the course. Additionally, the course is surrounded by canyons, which only add to the impressive nature of the landscape, while providing a unique challenge for golfers.

Lexi Thompson makes this year’s edition special

It’s been more than a decade now that Lexi Thompson has wowed us with her skills and poise on the LPGA Tour. Indeed, the 28-year-old American has won 11 times since 2011, and most recently was part of the American team in the 2023 Solheim Cup. Now, Thompson will be teeing off in her first-ever PGA Tour tournament when she takes to the course in the Shriners Children’s Open. To be clear she is just the seventh woman in golf’s history to play in an official Tour event.

So, what’s the purse and how much does the winner get?

The Shriners Children’s Open, contested at TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, features an $8.4 million purse. Of that amount, $1.51 million to the winner. Perhaps even better is the fact that the champion will also receive 500 FedExCup points. You can see a full breakdown of the prize money and points here.

If you didn’t know, this is the third event in the inaugural FedExCup Fall schedule, which will run through The RSM Classic. All tournaments will feature the same benefits as Regular Season tournaments, including two-year exemptions, 500 FedExCup points, and spots in THE PLAYERS, The Sentry, and the majors that invite TOUR winners. Lastly, you should note that the FedExCup Fall will finalize the top 125 who retain their status for 2024.
