The 2024 WM Phoenix Open, an annual golf tournament, is set to take place this week at TPC Scottsdale, Arizona. The tournament is part of the PGA Tour and attracts some of the top golfers in the world.

While the tournament is not a PGA Tour signature event like last year, it still has a strong field of players, including many top-ranked golfers. The tournament is famous for its lively crowds, especially at the par-3 16th hole, and is held during the week of the Super Bowl.

Scottie Scheffler, the number one golfer in the world, is the two-time defending champion of the 2024 WM Phoenix Open and is considered the favorite to win again this year. If he wins, he will become the first player to win an event three years in a row since Steve Stricker won the John Deere Classic in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Last year’s tournament had elevated status, which meant it had a prize pool of $20 million, with Scottie Scheffler taking home $3.6 million. However, this year, the prize pool is $8.8 million, with the winner receiving $1.584 million. Although this amount is less than the $25 million offered at the LIV Golf Las Vegas event, it’s still a significant prize that many golfers will be competing for.

Aside from the financial rewards, this week’s tournament winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points, which could be crucial in the race to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs later in the year. Additionally, the winner will receive around 58 world ranking points, which can greatly impact a golfer’s world ranking. Despite renewed calls to recognize the LIV Golf circuit in the world rankings, the WM Phoenix Open remains a valuable opportunity for PGA Tour golfers to earn ranking points and gain recognition in the golfing world.

2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open prize money distribution

Typically, the prize money payout in PGA Tour events is based on the participation of exactly 65 players who make the cut and complete the tournament. However, in events where the cut is standard to the top 65 players and ties, the payout formula is adjusted to include the exact number of players who make the cut, often leading to the addition of extra money to the stated purse to account for the additional players.
