The game of golf is at something of a crossroads. With the ‘average’ PGA Tour in the US reported to be aged between 45-60 years of age, the PGA has seen how the Saudi backed LIV Golf Tour has managed to realign the sport at a younger demographic and has needed to respond.

Tomorrow’s Golf League is the latest initiative (backed by the PGA Tour) that attempts to tap into a new audience and early signs have delivered positive results.

What is TGL?

TGL is golf played in an indoor circuit where players hit into a 64-foot x 53 foot golf simulator with grass, fairways, roughs and sand to give the players and fans a close-to-real feel.

The competition is played on a league basis with six teams involved.

Three players per team participate in the match and compete on 15 holes with the game lasting for approximately 2 hours. Players then compete in a “triples” 3 v 3 match play alternate shot format with points on the table for winning each hole.

TGL delivers strong opening viewership

The TGL debut showcased delivering impressive figures, drawing nearly a million viewers on ESPN, according to Nielsen viewing numbers with last Tuesday night’s broadcast attracting an average of 919,000 viewers during the 9-11 p.m. ET time slot.

The involvement of both Woods and McIlroy has generated a wealth of media interest with golf fans and curious sports fans in general tuning in to see what the fuss is all about.

From a golf perspective, the opening might of TGL delivered a better audience than any LIV Golf broadcast in 2023 and 2024, and also drew a larger audience than last week’s PGA Tour season opener (The Sentry) on the Golf Channel and NBC.

How to watch LA Golf Club vs Jupiter Links GC

The first match in the six-team TGL with Tiger Woods involved takes place on Tuesday as his Jupiter Links Golf Club take on Los Angeles Golf Club.

The 14 January game starts at at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN in the US.

The fifteen match regular season runs through to March 4, followed by the playoffs later that month.
