Kyrgios warns Sinner: what did the Australian say to the world No. 1?
The Australian, currently working as a TV commentator at the US Open, responded to Jannik Sinner for his unpunished positive for a banned anabolic steroid.
Jannik Sinner keeps progressing at the US Open 2024, where he’s looking to win his second Grand Slam tournament.
The Italian confirmed his transformation from a very talented player to a superstar at the start of the year, by winning the Australian Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.
Although he has been playing at a high level so far in New York, controversy keeps chasing him after testing positive twice in March for Clostebol, an anabolic steroid considered a performance enhancer.
The world No 1 submitted a urine sample that showed traces of the banned substance during Indian Wells in March, and another sample eight days later also tested positive.
Kyrgios’ last message to Sinner: what did he say?
Although the incident took place a few months ago, the case was made public only in August, days before the start of the US Open.
Sinner was cleared of punishment although the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) vacated his results at Indian Wells and forced him to return $325,000 in prize money.
Several ATP players criticized Sinner’s positive and alleged double standards after the Italian talent escaped any punishment.
One of them is Nick Kyrgios, who shared his opinion once the news broke. “Whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for two years”, he said.
Although Sinner explained he felt very relaxed and that he tends to forget people’s comments after Kyrgios’ statement, the Australian mentioned the incident again.
“As athletes, we use our platforms to make sure things are fair and even. That’s all I did. Some players are angry. We know Sinner is amazing, great tennis player and one of the main faces of the sport. But if you expect us to be silent... We won’t”, he wrote from his Instagram account on a Eurosport post.
The Kyrgios-Sinner ‘battle’ could continue, especially if the 23-year-old player keeps advancing in the US Open.
