Last dance for Kamaru Usman

After nearly two years out of the octagon, the former welterweight king is eyeing one last title run.

After nearly two years out of the octagon, the former welterweight king is eyeing one last title run.

Undoubtedly one of the UFC’s most respected and beloved former champions, Kamaru Usman (24-4-0) reigned over the welterweight division from 2019 to 2022. But his unexpected defeat to Leon Edwards marked the beginning of a steep decline. Now, the Nigerian fighter is aiming to reclaim his spot among the sport’s elite, with a high-stakes bout scheduled against Joaquin Buckley (21-6-0) in the early hours of Sunday (4:00 a.m. ET on MAX).

That Edwards kick cost Usman

On August 20, 2022, Usman experienced firsthand why Leon Edwards is nicknamed “Rocky.” After dominating the first four rounds, he was suddenly floored by a devastating high kick from the Brit – a moment that would become one of the most iconic knockouts in UFC history. That single blow cost him the title. Seven months later, the pair faced off again, and Edwards once more emerged victorious, this time via unanimous decision.

Still burning with competitive fire, Usman stepped into the octagon one last time in October 2023 to face the formidable Khamzat Chimaev – a rising force in the division – and suffered another defeat.

Now, after two years of uncertainty and absence, Usman finds himself at a career crossroads. His chance to climb back into contention comes against Buckley, currently ranked seventh in the division. The American enters the fight on a six-win streak, four of them by knockout, and at 31 years old, “New Mansa” has quickly become a fan favorite for his explosive style.

Yet for all Buckley’s momentum, Usman’s deep experience and championship pedigree could prove decisive. It’s a clash that promises fireworks – and for Usman, perhaps one final shot at glory.
