Marketa Vondrousova is the 2023 Wimbledon champion: how many grand slams titles has she won?

Marketa Vondrousova has beaten Ons Jabeur to become the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s single title.

Jabeur was hoping to overcome her defeat in last year’s final to Elena Rybakina. And the 28-year-old made a strong start, winning her serve and then breaking Vondrousova’s to take an early 2-0 lead.

Vondrousova, a most unlikely champion, rallied to take the first set, eventually winning the match 6-4, 6-4.

The left-handed Czech player, who was the world’s No 42 going into the tournament, had only one career title to her name.

The 24-year-old’s Wimbledon title is her first grand slam, and her victory on Saturday underlines the unpredictability of the women’s game.

Wimbledon history

By winning the championship, Vondrousova has gone one step further than tennis icon Billie Jean King, who made it to Wimbledon as an unseeded finalist in 1963 but eventually lost to Margaret Court.

Injured last year

Vondrousova missed Wimbledon last year through injury and spoke post-match about her incredible success.

“It was exhausting but I’m so grateful and proud of myself,” she told the BBC after clinching the Venus Rosewater Dish.

New tattoo

The new women’s champion - a big tattoo fan - was asked about getting another tattoo after winning Wimbledon.

“I have a bet with my coach... He said if I win a grand slam, he’s going to get one too! So I think we’re going to go tomorrow!

“It was an exhausting two weeks... I’m just really grateful and thanks to everyone for supporting [me] and being here.”
