Update:

Pressure makes us do - and say - funny things. Just ask bowling Hall of Famer Pete Weber.

The 62-year-old has enjoyed an illustrious career in the world of bowling, boasting a long list of achievements. Weber has won the U.S. Open a record five times, owns 10 major championships (tied for second all-time), and is the only bowler to win each event in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Triple Crown - the U.S. Open, PBA World Championship, and PBA Tournament of Champions - more than once.

The quote that made Pete Weber go viral

But despite his status as one of pro bowling’s greatest-ever stars, many people associate Weber most with a viral quote that made absolutely no sense - at least, not at the time. He has since tried to explain what he meant to say.

In February 2012, needing a strike to secure his fifth U.S. Open title, Weber delivered. He turned to the crowd and, with fists pumped, shouted in a mix of relief, fury, and delight: “Who do you think you are? I am!”

In an interview with Storm Bowling Products a few months later, Weber explained that what he was trying to say made sense in his head, but it didn’t quite come out right.

Pete Weber explains famous quote

“Being caught up in the moment of throwing the strike and being as excited as I was, I had a kid rooting against me during the match, and he was doing it loud enough for me to hear. And it kind of made me mad, and people know, don’t make me mad on TV, ’cause I’ll just get better.”

“But what I really wanted to say was, ‘Who do you think you are, rooting against me? I’m the man of this tournament!’ That’s what I really wanted to say. But as everybody knows, it’s ‘Who do you think you are? I am!’”
