Ons Jabeur, first African woman to reach a Grand Slam final after Wimbledon win

Tunisian Ons Jabeur set both personal and historical milestones when she defeated veteran Tatjana Maria in three sets, (6-3, 2-6, 6-1) at the Wimbledon semifinals.

She has become the first African woman and first Arab player, male or female, to reach the final of a Grand Slam event in the professional era.

“It’s a dream coming true from years and years of work and sacrifice. I’m happy it’s paying off,” said Jabeur, a very good friend of Maria.

The 27-year-old was all praises for her opponent, and said that running for the balls that the German sent her was a challenge.

“She killed me,” she joked. “She is an inspiration to all tennis players, for having been able to play again after having two daughters,” she added.

“I am a proud Tunisian woman standing here today. I know in Tunisia, they’re going crazy right now. I hope to inspire people as much as possible and see not only Tunisians but more Arab-African players on the tour. I love the game and I want to share this experience with them,” said Jabeur.

The world number two will face Kazakh Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon final on Saturday.

Ons Jabeur: A force for the past two years

Jabeur is one of the best players of the last two years as evidenced by her numbers and her unique style of tennis, which is very distinct from those of most of her companions on the women’s circuit.

Since 2020, she has won more matches than any other woman, reaching 84 with her semifinal victory, so far the most important of her career.

Jabeur had just won a tournament on grass in Berlin two weeks ago and is on a streak of 11 wins, making her a serious contender for the Wimbledon title.
