The 19th World Athletic Championships begin in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday, bringing together the best athletes on the planet.

The 2023 edition comes just 12 months after the last one, held in Eugene in the United States, after the covid-19 pandemic had a knock-on affect on the championships’ time schedule.

Most of the 49 events will be hosted at Budapest’s newly-opened National Athletics Centre, which will also be the venue for the opening ceremony on Saturday. More than 2,000 athletes representing more than 200 nations will be gathered for the 9-day event.

Last year the US team picked up a record-breaking 33 medals at the World Athletic Championships, doing so while hosting the event for the very first time. This time around reigning champions Noah Lyles (200m), Ryan Crouser and Chase Ealey (shot put) and Katie Moon (pole vault) will all be hoping to retain their gold medals. Lyles faces tough opposition from compatriot Fred Kerley.
