Outrage as statue of golf legend Seve Ballesteros stolen in Spanish town

The town of Pedreña, Spain, with just 1,300 residents, is reeling after the bronze statue honoring golf legend Seve Ballesteros vanished. Erected in 2017 near the entrance of the local golf club, the sculpture captured Ballesteros’ iconic triumphant pose from his 1984 British Open win at St. Andrews, a milestone in Spanish golf that cemented his global reputation. Ballesteros, born in Pedreña in 1957, passed away in 2011.

Authorities say the statue was last seen Monday afternoon in a busy area frequented by cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. The Civil Guard and local police have launched an investigation, with theft suspected as the likely cause.

Town officials confirm loss of Seve statue

The disappearance only became public when the Marina de Cudeyo town council, which governs Pedreña, issued a social media statement:

“We have learned of the disappearance of the statue honoring Seve Ballesteros in Pedreña. Local police and the Civil Guard have begun investigations to clarify this unfortunate event, which appears to be a theft. If anyone witnessed suspicious activity, especially in the last 24 hours, please inform the Civil Guard or the local police,” the post read.

Mayor speaks of local outrage: “Beyond economics”

Pedro Pérez, mayor of Marina de Cudeyo, described the alleged theft as a source of “outrage, disbelief, and sadness.” He added, “We are all upset. This is a heritage asset with immense value. Other thefts, though frustrating, can be replaced. Many towns have had streetlight cables stolen - it costs money and disrupts services - but this goes beyond economics. Seve is an icon. He is part of the town’s identity, how we lived golf, and a hometown athlete who, even after achieving greatness, maintained a strong bond with Pedreña.”
