Ryder Cup pick says he wants to “smash up” his golf clubs: amateurs feel his pain
Bob MacIntyre’s frustration after losing to Scottie Scheffler is a feeling every weekend golfer knows too well.

There’s nothing quite like golf to make you want to break your own equipment. Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre admitted as much after throwing away a four-shot lead at the BMW Championship, telling reporters he felt “really pissed off” and just wanted to “smash up” his clubs.
The Ryder Cup pick had started the day three over through five holes, opening the door for Scottie Scheffler. That was enough for the world No 1 to stride through and collect his fifth win of the season, thanks in part to a ridiculous chip-in birdie at 17.
It’s golf. I’ve been there myself: one sloppy swing, one putt left short, and you feel like the game is mocking you. MacIntyre’s candor struck a chord with amateurs everywhere, who’ve all thought about tossing a club into the nearest pond.

“Yeah, I’m just really pissed off right now… Right now I want to go and smash up my golf clubs, to be honest with you.”

Still, perspective matters. Scheffler is on a run for the ages and rarely leaves room for mistakes. MacIntyre may feel gutted now, but he heads to the Ryder Cup with form and fight, although he may hope not to be pitted against him.
If you’ve ever trudged off a course muttering about quitting, you’ll know MacIntyre’s pain... but you’ll also know you’ll be back next week.
