Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is currently the highest-profile Mexican boxer. Today, he holds the title of the Undisputed World Super Middleweight Champion. However, despite his remarkable career, Canelo does not yet consider himself to be the greatest boxer in Mexico’s history. He does, however, believe that his legacy will be determined over time, potentially making that claim for him.

Canelo on being the best

“Talking about the history of Mexico means talking about many fighters,” Canelo said in an interview with Univisión Fresno. “I don’t think of myself as the greatest in Mexican history. Ultimately, I believe my records will speak for themselves when I retire, so there’s no need for me to proclaim it. Right now, I feel I am the best in the world and the best in Mexico, and that’s what matters.”

Canelo has been a champion in the Super Welterweight and Middleweight divisions, but his greatest success came in the 168-pound division, where he became the undisputed champion. He has successfully defended the WBA, WBO, IBF, and WBC titles multiple times. Canelo has also fought in the Light Heavyweight division against Dmitri Bivol, with whom he seeks a rematch in the future.

Who is Álvarez’s next opponent?

Canelo’s next fight is scheduled for September, with his opponent yet to be confirmed. Among the list of potential challengers are David Benavidez and Terence Crawford. Additionally, Edgar Berlanga, a fighter from Matchroom, has emerged as another possible opponent.
