Saúl Canelo Álvarez is eager to return to the ring for the first time this year and he will fight Dmitry Bivol on 7 May at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Mexican superstar will return to 175 pounds to face the unbeaten Russian star for the WBA championship.

How many Russian fighters has Canelo fought?

Saúl Canelo Álvarez has never lost against a Russian boxer and Bivol will be his third opponent from that country. The Mexican pound-for-pound king first defeated Marat Khuzeev from Russia when he was only 19-years-old and the fight took place at auditorio Benito Juárez de Zapopan in Mexico City.

The second time he fought and defeated a Russian boxer was Sergey Kovalev back in November 2019. That fight ended after 11 rounds with Canelo Álvarez knocking him out to take victory.

Right now, I have Bivol,” said Canelo during a Media Conference Call. “He’s stronger than Kovalev, yes. He’s a solid champion at 175, a really good fighter. So, it’s a challenge for me, and this kind of challenge motivates me. I’m trying to extend my legacy.”
