Swimmers shocked as baby orca joins a surf session
A group of surfers in New Zealand experienced an unusual encounter when a young orca appeared among the waves and surfed with them for several minutes.
A group of surfers off the coast of New Zealand witnessed a scene as unexpected as it was unforgettable: a baby orca swam among them for several minutes while a drone captured every movement from above.
The footage, filmed during a surf session involving several local youths, shows the young whale approaching the lineup with striking curiosity. According to the drone pilot, he tried to alert the surfers to the orca’s presence but couldn’t get their attention. “Everyone on the beach was pointing at something, but we had no idea what was going on. By the time we realized, the orca was already right there with us,” recalled surfer Te Waiotu in a video now circulating on social media.
Despite their literal English name of “killer whale,” orcas pose no direct threat to humans. There are no documented cases of fatal attacks by wild orcas, though a few incidents have occurred in captivity—most involving the same animal. Even so, experts stress that these encounters should be treated with respect, maintaining a safe distance for the well-being of both people and the orca.
The video quickly went viral, celebrated for the calmness of the encounter and the young cetacean’s playful curiosity. “It was the strangest and most incredible thing that’s ever happened to me while surfing,” Waiotu said.
Such appearances, while rare, are not unheard of in the waters of Aotearoa. Orcas are known to venture close to shore in search of food, and their presence—though startling—remains a natural part of the marine ecosystem.
