The Open: Record 290,000 spectators to attend 2022 Championship at St Andrews
The Open Championship is celebrating its 150th anniversary and will be attended by a record crowd of 290,000 in July.
The 150th edition of The Open at St Andrews in July will be attended by a record-breaking crowd of 290,000, tournament organisers have announced.
A record 80,000 will also be present for the four practice days, surpassing the 61,000 who attended the equivalent days at Royal Portrush in 2019.
The previous highest attendance for the tournament itself was 239,000, set in 2000 when Tiger Woods triumphed at St Andrews.
Some 1.3 million people applied for tickets and 52,000 will be present across each of the four days of the Championship, which will be staged from July 14 until July 17.
Record crowds at first St Andrews Open since 2015
R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said: “The 150th Open at St Andrews is going to be a momentous occasion for golf.
“This is clearly reflected in the extraordinary demand among fans to be part of this historic playing of the Championship.
“We very much appreciate their passion and enthusiasm for The Open and are delighted that we will set a new attendance record that far exceeds the previous best set in 2000.”
The Open has been held at St Andrews on 29 previous occasions, most recently in 2015 when Zach Johnson beat Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman in a four-hole play-off.
