The rematch that could close the circle between Bivol and Canelo Álvarez: “We’ll see what happens”

The Russian boxer defeated Canelo Álvarez in 2022, and now the Mexican champion is looking to change weight divisions once again.

Ciudad de Mèxico Update:

Mexican boxing star Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez has only suffered two losses in his professional career. The first came in 2011 at the hands of the legendary American Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Eleven years later, Canelo failed to defeat Russian fighter Dmitry Bivol in a bout at light heavyweight, a division not familiar to the Guadalajara native. Álvarez is currently the super middleweight champion under the WBC, WBO, WBA, and The Ring organizations.

Bivol

In a recent conversation with Ring Magazine, Canelo made it clear he hasn’t forgotten the man who last beat him.

“It doesn’t bother me (the loss), you know, I want to tell myself, ‘Hey, you learned something from that fight. Don’t make those mistakes again.’ I keep telling myself, ‘You need to show you’re a better fighter than him.’”

With a record of 62 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws, Álvarez revealed that he was injured during the Bivol fight.

“I was at 50% of my ability in that fight. No conditioning, nothing, because I couldn’t run or spar. I went a whole month without sparring because of my hand. I couldn’t run either, due to my knee. So I had injuries in my hand and knee, but even with that, I had a good fight—a very good one—but I know it wasn’t enough.”

Now, the Mexican star has already traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he will fight Cuban boxer William Scull on May 3 for the IBF super middleweight title.

A New Star Emerges

Also appearing on the fight card is Marco Verde, who is making his professional debut. The silver medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics caught the attention of the boxing world, receiving multiple offers to go pro.

He ultimately chose to join Team Canelo, where he is trained by Eddy Reynoso. The young fighter from Mazatlán will have his first professional bout on the undercard of Canelo vs. Scull in Saudi Arabia.
