Update:

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic meet once again in a mouthwatering 2025 US Open semifinal clash at Flushing Meadows, with the young Spaniard hoping to regain momentum in the rivalry after back-to-back defeats against the veteran Serb.

A rivalry that spans generation

After Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in a second straight Wimbledon final in 2024, many believed it signaled the torch being passed to the leading star of the new generation in men’s tennis.

However, 38-year-old Djokovic defied expectations and bounced back in superb fashion, beating Alcaraz to claim a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics before knocking the 22-year-old out of this year’s Australian Open in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic’s record-breaking numbers

Although he didn’t win in Melbourne, Djokovic remains the most successful men’s tennis player in history. He has captured 24 Grand Slam titles, 40 ATP Masters 1000 singles titles, and 100 ATP Tour tournaments overall, second only to Roger Federer’s 103. Djokovic could still surpass that total before he retires.

The Serbian star’s record-breaking achievements are even more remarkable considering he spent the early years of his career up against Federer and Rafael Nadal in their primes, both also ranked among the greatest players the sport has ever seen.

Alcaraz’s rapid rise

Djokovic’s relatively slow start at elite level stands in contrast to US Open semifinal opponent Alcaraz.

The Spaniard, born May 5, 2003, is now 22 years and four months old. Since the start of his professional career, he has already collected five Grand Slam titles, eight ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and 22 ATP Tour titles.

Those numbers easily outshine Djokovic’s record at the same age. The Serb turned 22 during the 2009 French Open but lost in the third round at Roland-Garros. By that stage, he had won only one Grand Slam, the 2008 Australian Open, and would not win his second until Melbourne in 2011 at 23 years and eight months old.

Can Alcaraz rewrite tennis history?

By Alcaraz’s current age, Djokovic had won only four Masters 1000 titles, compared with the Spaniard’s eight, and 13 ATP Tour events, compared with 22.

Alcaraz is therefore well on course to surpass Djokovic’s achievements, especially with Federer and Nadal no longer competing at the highest level. Italian star Jannik Sinner and the challenge of staying fit and healthy appear to be the main obstacles to Alcaraz making tennis history.
