Utah NHL fans can vote on these 20 names for hockey’s new franchise

Just three weeks after the state was handed a team in the National Hockey League, owner Ryan Smith has handed the name choice to the fans.

“Utah’s NHL team is a community asset, and we want to make sure that the community has a say in what the name is.

Those were the words of Utah’s new NHL team’s owner, Ryan Smith, who explained that the fans are going to play their part when it comes to the team’s name.

“Utah has shown up for this team from the moment the NHL awarded us the franchise less than three weeks ago,” Smith continued, “and it is only fitting that our fans get the rare opportunity to help name the team they’ll be cheering for.”

This comes after the NHL board of governors approved the relocation of the Arizona Coyotes on 13 April.

What names are on Utah’s NHL shortlist?

A survey was issued by Smith Entertainment Group, which also owns NBA’s Utah Jazz, on Wednesday. This had the 20-name shortlist from which the final decision will be made. These are the options available:

Utah...

  • Frost
  • Ice
  • Powder
  • Mountaineers
  • Freeze
  • Mammoth
  • Black Diamonds
  • Blast, Caribou
  • Blizzard, Swarm
  • Hive
  • Outlaws
  • Yeti
  • Squall
  • Fury
  • Glaciers
  • Canyons
  • Venom
  • HC (Hockey Club)

The opening round of voting runs until 22 May 2024 following which, it would appear, there will be further rounds.

What name does Utah NHL go by now?

Obviously the final name being chosen will take a little time so, in the meantime, the team’s jerseys will just have the state on them. Once the fans have made their call, the new name, plus a logo and determined colors, will be introduced, all thanks to the work by Doubleday & Cartwright, who specialize in branding. This will be in time for the 2025/26 season.
