Born in Chicago, Joe played varsity football and baseball in Bowling Green, Ohio for BGHS and later played lacrosse at BGSU. A year abroad in Spain changed everything. As destiny would have it he ended up living in Zaragoza, running his own business, teaching Journalism at a private university then working as a SEO journalist for Diario AS.
Update:

His press conference on Tuesday at the Masters got some attention from the golf world, but not only his comments about his game and swing. When asked about his participation in the UAP Files Podcast, Hovland explained how that interest of his can maybe help with his golf game. “It comes down to what is ontological truth and how we view reality itself. I think it’s just interesting when you have an open mind and you question everything,” he said. “Even with the golf swing you can get very dogmatic and you look at things like this has to be a truth, this has to be correct and sometimes the beliefs you hold most deeply can obfuscate yourself and sometimes when you look at things from different angles you might get to a deeper truth and that’s a fascinating endeavor to engage in and hopefully it leads you to the right direction.”

The podcast the journalist referred to was a conversation about UFOs, whistleblowers, government secrecy and a little about golf, according to the host. Hovland takes it all in stride and in the conversation demonstrates his knowledge on the topic and knows many of the top investigators in the subject. On Tuesday at the Masters he wasn’t shy when asked about the subject, “As long as you have an objective mindset while looking into this information, I think it’s just fun,” he said.

The seven-time winner on the PGA Tour got off to a rough start in 2025 with a T36 and T22 and then three straight missed cuts. He then surprised everyone at the Valspar Championship by winning the tournament and breaking the dry streak. He has been very upfront about his struggles with his swing and talked about that on the podcast. “I’ve had to question a lot of things that I’ve done,” he said. “You have to question everything.”
