Weather delay hits UFC Freedom 250 as storms threaten White House event
Severe weather in Washington, D.C. has already pushed back the start of the historic UFC Freedom 250 card, headlined by Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje.

The weather has already had an impact on UFC Freedom 250.
The opening bout of the historic event, being held on the South Lawn of the White House, has been delayed by one hour because of concerns over thunderstorms in the Washington, D.C. area. UFC later announced that live coverage on Paramount+ would begin at 8 p.m. ET following the schedule change.

Freedom 250
Freedom 250 is one of the most ambitious events in UFC history, featuring a temporary arena built at the White House and headlined by lightweight champion Ilia Topuria’s title unification bout against Justin Gaethje. The card also includes an interim heavyweight title fight between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira. Some experts have been less than impressed by the line-up and noted that it may have been a victim of its own hype.
Weather could continue to play a major role throughout the evening.
According to forecasts cited by The Weather Channel, the event faces a 60% chance of thunderstorms, along with heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 34 mph. While the venue’s large overhead structure is designed to keep the Octagon dry, lightning remains the biggest concern.

Under standard U.S. outdoor-event safety protocols, any lightning strike within an eight-mile radius of the venue automatically triggers a 30-minute suspension of activities. The clock resets if another lightning strike is detected during that period, meaning repeated storms could lead to significant delays.
The forecast also includes extreme humidity, pushing heat index values into the triple digits, creating challenging conditions for fighters and spectators alike.
If no further weather interruptions occur, Topuria’s main event is still expected to begin around midnight ET. However, with thunderstorms forecast throughout the evening, organizers will be hoping the weather cooperates during one of the most unusual events in combat sports histo
