What did Gervonta Davis say about Canelo Alvarez?

Gervonta Davis has stated that he is the new face of boxing, and that undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez is on the way out.

With more than a month to go before Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia meet at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for their catchweight division fight, the WBA lightweight champion has proclaimed himself the new face of boxing.

Canelo [Alvarez] goin’ out the door... I’m the face of boxing,” Davis said at the news conference for his bout.

The numbers that support Davis’ claim is his high knockout percentage, since of his 28 wins, 26 have come by KO. Among his most prominent rivals are Mexican Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Canelo has a 58-2-2 record with 39 knockouts, his defeats coming from light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol last year, and Floyd Mayweather ten years ago.

Highly-anticipated fight

The Tank claims that the fight between him and Garcia will be the biggest in five years. The most watched fight in that span was Canelo-Golovkin II in 2018 when there were nearly 1.1 million buys for the HBO pay-per-view.

Oscar de la Hoya, Ryan Garcia’s promoter, echoes Davis’ statement. The former champion believes that this fight has the opportunity to break the record for the most pay-per-views established by Floyd Mayweather and himself in 2007. In that bout, Mayweather won the WBC super welterweight title and HBO had 2.45 million buys along with $19 million in ticket sales.

“I think in terms of numbers and business, I feel like this is like Mayweather-De La Hoya,” said the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “I think it can beat the 2.4 million buys that Mayweather and I did, it’s a great fight.”

The Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia fight will take place on Saturday, April 22at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will be available for Showtime and DAZN pay-per-view.
