What it means to be an interim UFC champion: Next steps explained as Topuria takes time out
Ilia Topuria’s absence has led the UFC to schedule an interim lightweight title fight between Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje.

The UFC has locked in the lineup for its first big card of 2026: UFC 324, scheduled for January 24 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. One notable storyline? The absence of reigning lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, who won’t be stepping into the Octagon early in the year due to personal reasons.
Topuria hasn’t fought since last June, when he claimed the belt by defeating Charles Oliveira. With the champ sidelined, the UFC has opted to crown an interim lightweight champion, pitting British star Paddy Pimblett against American powerhouse Justin Gaethje.

What does it mean to be an ‘interim champion’ in the UFC?
So, what exactly is an interim UFC champion? In combat sports, an interim title is introduced when the reigning champion can’t defend the belt - whether due to injury, suspension, or other circumstances, as is the case with Topuria.
The winner of the interim lightweight title fight between Pimblett and Gaethje will hold the division’s crown temporarily. Eventually, that fighter will face Topuria in a unification bout to merge the interim strap with the undisputed championship - and determine the true king of the UFC lightweight division.
