Serena Williams is ready to say goodbye to tennis

With Serena Williams having now confirmed that she intends to walk away from the game that has made her a global icon, the world of tennis has been left in somewhat of a daze as it prepares to say goodbye to one of the best to ever grace the court. Indeed, in an article published on Tuesday, August 9th the 40-year-old winner of 23 Grand Slam titles cited a need to ‘evolve away from tennis’ and “grow her family,” as the main factors behind her monumental decision.

“I have never liked the word retirement,” Williams stated. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. ...Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” Williams went on to add that her daughter, Olympia would like to “be a big sister”.
