For the second time in the history since the inception of the event in 1990, the Solheim Cup will be played in back-to-back years. The 2023 tournament was played at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain last September and the 2024 event will be played this year between 13-15 September at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. The global Covid pandemic providing instrumental in upsetting the calendar of the biennial golf tournament for professional women golfers contested by teams representing Europe and the United States.

The United States teams have won the cup ten times, compared with eight wins for Europe but the current holders are Europe, who retained the cup with a 14–14 draw last year in Spain.

The tournament is played over three days and since 2002, there have been 28 matches—eight foursomes and eight four-balls played on days 1 and 2, and 12 singles on the final day. This format is also used in the Ryder Cup.

One point is awarded to the team that wins each match; in the event of a tie, both teams score half a point. After all matches are complete, the team with more points wins or retains the Cup. Any ties are broken in favor of the defending champion team.

The 2024 US team

U.S. Solheim Cup Team Captain Stacy Lewis has confirmed her captain’s picks for the 2024 Solheim Cup and has selected: Jennifer Kupcho, Sarah Schmelzel and Lexi Thompson.

Kupcho, Schmelzel and Thompson join the nine automatic qualifiers for the U.S. Team who were named following the completion of play at the AIG Women’s Open. Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang and Andrea Lee qualified via the U.S. Solheim Cup Team Standings, while Rose Zhang and Alison Lee qualified via the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

Thompson will represent the U.S. for the seventh consecutive time, joining 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. She moves into a tie for third for the most times competing for the U.S., joining Paula Creamer, Rosie Jones and Morgan Pressel, trailing only Cristie Kerr and Juli Inkster with nine appearances and Beth Daniel and Meg Mallon with eight.

Lexi was probably the easiest pick to make of these three, with her experience. I know what Lexi can do at a Solheim Cup and that definitely helped her get a pick,” said Lewis. “She’s somebody who is going to help the team out a lot, on the golf course and also off. With her experience, everybody on the team’s going to be watching what she does to try to learn from her. I am very happy to have Lexi back”, confirmed the US team captain.
