Why didn’t Gervonta Davis sign with Mayweather Promotions again?

Update:
Over the past few years, Davis has been under the umbrella of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s promotion but Tank decided to leave the company. Why?

The boxing world is looking at Gervonta Davis, who will be facing Ryan Garcia this Saturday in Las Vegas in what many consider to be the best boxing fight in 2023.

Not all the boxers with a remarkable amateur career ended up succeeding when they turned pro, but that wasn’t the case for Tank.

Davis made his professional debut in 2013, at the age of 18 after capturing the 2012 Golden Gloves championship, three consecutive Silver Gloves wins, two Junior Olympic gold medals, and winning over 200 fights.

After an impressive 11-0 record in his career, with 10 of those fights ending before the final bell, Floyd Mayweather Jr. got interested in Davis’ situation and after watching him spar decided to sign the Baltimore native.

The reason why ‘Tank’ left Mayweather Promotions

Davis’s brilliant career kept going on under the guidance of Mayweather Jr., who hung up the gloves with a perfect record of 50-0.

The 28-year-old star, who has held multiple world championships in three weight classes, became a multimillionaire soon thanks to his outstanding boxing skills and power.

However, not everything was perfect. It was reported Davis didn’t fancy Mayweather’s attempts to guide his career in a similar direction to his own, choosing fights carefully while building his reputation without facing big names.

After reaching star status and being able to decide which opponent to fight, Davis decided to leave Mayweather Promotions last year, as he believes he’s now in a position where he no longer needs anyone to promote his fights.

This just a test run right now, just on my own type of joint. But much love to Mayweather Promotions, Leonard, Floyd, and all the guys. I definitely appreciate them but I’m just doing my own thing now. I’m not saying in the future we can’t work together or anything like that”, Davis said before facing Hector Luis Garcia.

Although Gervonta explained there isn’t any bad blood between him and Mayweather after his departure, it’s unclear whether their relationship is as good as it used to be.

Ryan Garcia will be Davis’ toughest test and regardless of the outcome of the fight, Tank will have other big names in mind to try to make super fights with, such as Devin Haney or Shakur Stevenson.
