Why is Canelo training in Lake Tahoe? The boxer’s strategic plan for the fight against William Scull
The Mexican boxing star fine-tunes conditioning in high-altitude camp before Riyadh showdown.

Mexican boxing icon Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez has set up camp in Lake Tahoe, using the mountain altitude to boost stamina and oxygen efficiency as he prepares for his May 3 fight against William Scull in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Altitude training for Canelo
Located near the California-Nevada border, Lake Tahoe’s 6,200-foot elevation (1,890 meters) provides the ideal conditions for Canelo’s training camp. The elevation increases red blood cell production, helping to improve cardiovascular endurance – crucial for a fighter with 66 career bouts.

In addition to intense cardio and sparring sessions, the 33-year-old is also laser-focused on recovery and nutrition. His protein-heavy diet includes chicken, steak, fish, and vegetables, maintaining a strict balance while still incorporating the flavors of his Mexican roots.
Canelo targets dominance
For Álvarez (62-2-2), the bout with Cuban-born German contender William Scull is more than just a title defense - it’s another chapter in his quest to solidify his legacy as the undisputed super middleweight king. The Riyadh venue adds a new cultural and climatic wrinkle, something Canelo is embracing as part of his growth.
“Training at altitude helps me prepare not just my body, but my mind too,” Álvarez said in a recent interview. “This is about staying one step ahead.”
