Update:

Team USA are dealing with the terrible news concerning Charlie McAvoy that will see him miss out on the game against Canada.

The Boston Bruins defenseman was hospitalized on Monday night after suffering an upper-body injury. The physical issue forced him to miss his side’s 2-1 loss against Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Ahead of the game against Canada, the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride revealed that McAvoy was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital with The Athletic’s Pierre Lebrun reporting that McAvoy “is still having tests run on him”.

Team USA injury latest:

As for Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan, he confirmed the injury after Monday’s game: “Charlie is out with an upper-body injury,” Sullivan said, in a somewhat coy fashion. “We’ll likely have more information [on Tuesday] about his status.”

McAvoy, who has seven goals and 16 assists this season for Boston, has a history of upper-body and shoulder injuries, with the latest coming at the worst possible time; forwards Auston Matthews and Matthew Tkachuk were also left out against Sweden.

Brady Tkachuk and Vincent Trocheck both left the field of play with match-ending injuries. “It is not easy,” Mike Sullivan said of the injury concerns. “We try to spread the minutes around a little bit. I thought the guys competed hard.”

Sullivan did, however, offer some hope of their participation, saying the team has not made any moves to bring in emergency replacements: “We’re hopeful we’re going to get some of these guys back. I would anticipate we would. We’ll have to wait and see how things play out here over the next day or so. Obviously, there will be contingency planning in the event that we need people.”

The USA face Canada in the most hotly-anticipated round-robin clash on Saturday, February 15. The Canadians will hope to make hope advantage count in Montreal. With the game starting at 8:00 p.m. ET., fans in the United States can watch the contest live on ABC and ESPN+, while it will be shown on SN and TVAS in Canada.
