Will Donald Trump attend the 2025 Ryder Cup?

From the Super Bowl to the US Open, Donald Trump is making a habit of turning major sports into political stages.

Update:

In his second term as president of the United States, Donald Trump is showing a notable appetite for attending all kinds of sporting events. Last February, for instance, he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl – although he didn’t even wait for the end of the game before leaving New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. The Club World Cup final, the Daytona 500, UFC 314 and 316, a New York Yankees game, and the US Open final – which was delayed 45 minutes due to his presence – are just some of the events Trump has attended this past year. Now he has one more marked on his calendar: the Ryder Cup.

The cost of Trump’s sporting visits

A lifelong golf enthusiast and regular player, with a handicap of around 2.8, Trump will be at Bethpage Black in New York on Friday, when a new edition of the Ryder Cup tees off. The US president, who owns a substantial number of golf courses around the world, will attend to support his country in the contest against Europe.

His presence, of course, comes at a price: sports outlet FOS reported this week that his Super Bowl trip alone cost about $115,000 in hotel bills for the Secret Service. Officials in Nassau County have already urged fans to arrive early on Friday given the heavy security measures and the slow traffic expected.

Trump: Team USA’s inspirer

Scottie Scheffler, the world No 1 and star of the US team, spoke about Trump’s upcoming visit, revealing that he has a strong personal relationship with him. “He loves golf and supporting the players. Sometimes, after my victories, he’ll call or text me. When you’re around him, he does a great job of giving you confidence. He treats everyone the same way, with the utmost respect – whether it’s the person serving him food, a caddie, or the club president.

"He treats everyone like they’re the most important person in the world. I don’t think he plans to address us as a team, but it’ll be fine and I’m sure we’ll hear from him this week,” said the four-time major winner.
