Domenicali: “Verstappen knows his opinion carries weight”

Formula 1 is well aware of the noise surrounding its upcoming rule changes. And while those who approved the new regulations remain convinced this is the direction the sport needs — with some fine‑tuning still underway in meetings with the FIA and the teams — the criticism hasn’t gone unnoticed. Above all, they’re concerned about the reaction from fans, the people who ultimately sustain the sport, but also from the drivers, who have been increasingly vocal.

Olive branch extended to Verstappen

That’s the context in which F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali spoke with Motorsport, addressing one name in particular: Max Verstappen, the most outspoken critic of the current direction of Formula 1.

“With Max, we have spoken many, many times since the beginning. So we understand that I understand his comments and he understands the bigger picture. Even today he has been in a meeting where he was very keen to give suggestions. So, you know, I don’t want to fall into the trap of trying to create an antagonism because that’s not me. It’s not the way that we want to see that. So we’re going to be together,” Domenicali said, extending an olive branch to the Dutch star.

Still, he offered what sounded like a gentle warning to the Red Bull driver, who has already hinted he could walk away from F1 early if things don’t change.

He added that he’s reminded them of the bigger picture: “He’s the best driver, he’s a world champion, multiple world champion, and of course, his voice has to be listened to. But of course, he knows that his voice also has a weight. And he needs to respect that weight because sometimes some people can take it the wrong way. And this is something that we should not allow to happen”. According to Domenicali, the message has landed.

Expanding the conversation to the rest of the grid — where criticism is also common — Domenicali said his discussions with drivers are “very open.”

They know I care about their opinions and want them involved, but certain things need to be considered. If you speak to the drivers at the top, they are always very happy because they are winning. The others can be frustrated, also because they love a different way of racing, which I respect a lot.”

“What’s artificial? An overtake is an overtake”

Addressing broader criticism, Domenicali didn’t mince words about people who “love to complain”.

Criticizing just to criticize doesn’t help anyone. What’s artificial? An overtake is an overtake.”

He insists the racing is “very, very good” because “there’s a lot of action,” and says most of the changes being discussed focus on qualifying.

I see incredibly positive feedback from most fans regarding the races. I absolutely accept criticism about certain situations that need managing — mainly qualifying. That’s the area we’re working on right now to find the right adjustment without losing our direction.”
