Egyptian giants Al Ahly had their struggles in the group stage of the competition, but took down Raja Casablanca, arch rivals of Moroccan side Wydad, in the quarterfinals. They appear to be just hitting their stride in the latter stages of the competition, taking Algerian giants ES Sétiffienne apart in the semi finals.

The Cairo club, generally held to be the most successful team in Africa, is looking to extend their impressive records and become the first team to win the African crown three times in a row.

South African coach Pitso Mosimane says, “If we can make history, it will be a great thing for this club and the players. But we know we are coming up against a very strong opponent and we will have to prepare well.”

Wydad came through the group stage on top before squeaking through a narrow quarterfinal victory over Algerian number one side CR Belouizdad 1-0, and then looking to be in firm control in their semifinal 4-2 win over top Angolan club Petro de Luanda in the semi final.

Wydad will have the benefit of playing this game in their home ground, and are no stranger to the CAFCL crown, being two-time winners of the competition.

Coach Walid Regraui makes light of the edge that playing at home might give them, saying, “We are ready to play anywhere. CAF decided to play the final in Morocco and we should respect their decision. It is not important for us where the final will take place. We are ready to play in Dakar, in Istanbul or in any other place. We earned four away wins in this edition and we are ready to grab a fifth.”
