After a decade of success, are Bayern about to let their Bundesliga crown slip?
Three second half goals saw Mainz shock Bayern Munich as Dortmund lead the way with just five games remaining in the Bundesliga season.
With just five games to go in the Bundesliga, the ball is firmly in Borussia Dortmund’s court after Saturday’s results that saw Bayern Munich fall to Mainz 05 (3-1) with Borussia Dortmund showing no nerves in the later game as the brushed Eintracht Frankfurt (4-0) aside at Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund lead the table on 60 points with Bayern on 59 with just five matchdays of the 2022-23 season to play.
It’s been a disastrous April for the Bavarian side. Following the departure of former coach Julian Nagelsmann, the most decorated German side were dumped out of the German Cup (DFB Pokal) as they lost at home to Freiburg (1-2) earlier in the month, were eliminated in the Champions League at the hands of Manchester City and new coach Thomas Tuchel has to contend with internal tension among the board of directors.
The wheels have very much come off at the club following the ‘Der Klassiker’ win over Dortmund on Saturday, 1 April 1 when it seemed that Bayern would cruise to an eleventh consecutive Bundesliga title.
With five games remaining in the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, this is the run-in for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
