Alex Morgan: SD Wave wants to continue breaking records

The San Diego Wave had a historic first season in the NWSL, breaking attendance records and making waves with fans. This season, they’re looking for more.

Update:

The San Diego Wave made their debut in the NWSL last season and it went better than anyone could have hoped. They immediately created a huge fanbase and broke attendance records with a sold-out stadium of 32,000 fans there to see them make their debut. Not to mention, they’re good. They made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to Crystal Dunn.

“This club has set the bar”

This season, the Wave is hoping to make it even further. Led by head coach Casey Stoney, the roster includes Alex Morgan, Sofia Jakobson, and Abby Dahlkemper, plus some talented young players, including Naomi Girma and Jaedyn Shaw. They recently signed Danielle Colaprico from the Chicago Red Stars and Megan Dougherty Howard from the Orlando Pride.

“The team is feeling really good,” said Alex Morgan. “We’ve added some crucial pieces to our roster, along with some great rookies that have already showcased themselves this preseason…we are looking forward to picking up where we left off last year.”

Last year, they left off third at the table after spending the majority of the season at the top. Their loss in the semifinals to Crystal Dunn came on a goal in stoppage time. They came so close to making it to the top in just their first season in the league - a good sign of things to come.

This team and club has high hopes and has set the bar, and we want to continue to do that with the home opener attendance record,” said Morgan. “And just continue on that run of breaking records.”
