Alexis Vega, a player who emerged as one of Chivas’s most promising prospects for the future, has decided to change course. In the absence of an official announcement from both clubs, the Mexico international has elected to leave Guadalajara to join Cruz Azul, Adrian Esparza Otero, from TUDN, has learned.

All change at Cruz Azul and Chivas

The journalist reports that both directives have closed the deal for the 26-year-old forward for a $3 million fee. The transfer occurs within the framework of a major restructuring of both historic Mexican clubs. La Máquina had a disastrous 2023, and the new head coach Martín Anselmi is in the process of overhauling the squad with reinforcements including Kevin Mier, Gonzalo Piovi, Camilo Cándido and Lorenzo Faravelli to feature in the Clausura 2024.

Vega, who joined Chivas from Toluca on a $5 million deal in 2019, moves on after having made 147 appearances for the club and scored 28 goals. He was part of the Mexico squad that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019.

Chivas meanwhile said goodbye to Serbian coach Veljko Paunovic, who led them to a final against Tigres last summer, and welcomed Fernando Gago to guide the Flock. According to unofficial sources, the Argentine coach was the one who decided that Vega wouldn’t figure in his plans for the new campaign due to his constant problems with indiscipline.
