Fulham’s faith in Álvaro Arbeloa already under scrutiny after difficult debut

Friendly games are what they are – experiments. Even so, the feeling is different when it is your first game in charge of a club like Fulham. History carries weight, and English clubs inspire a sense of belonging that is hard to match anywhere else in Europe. Álvaro Arbeloa embarked on this new adventure after leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season. Following a 2-0 defeat to Norwich, the Premier League is already wondering whether the Spaniard has what it takes to lead a project that appears destined to battle relegation once again.

Arbeloa’s journey as a top-level coach has been anything but straightforward. Real Madrid is a club where the demands are so high that not everyone is equipped to survive in the Santiago Bernabéu dugout. After a year away from coaching, the Spaniard headed to England to take charge of one of the Premier League’s most historic clubs. The differences from Spanish soccer are striking. Physicality takes precedence over almost every tactical aspect, and the game is played at a much more direct tempo than in Spain.

The reality is that Fulham have a squad crying out for star quality. If English clubs have become known for anything in recent years, it is the vast sums they are willing to spend in the transfer market. Now, after that opening defeat and with less than a month to go before the new league season begins, the sense of urgency is already growing on the banks of the Thames. Reinforcements are needed if the squad is to be refreshed and given a new lease on life.

Even so, Álvaro Arbeloa must remain the driving force behind the project. At times he impressed in Madrid, giving the team from Chamartín a clear identity before everything eventually unraveled. The process will not be easy, and the tests ahead will reveal what the Spaniard is truly made of. Emery, Arteta and Iraola’s Premier League is about to welcome another Spanish coach. Only time will tell whether he succeeds or once again falls from a horse he never truly managed to master.
