All about Mathis Albert, who made history for the United States in the Bundesliga
The player, born in South Carolina, made his debut with Borussia Dortmund.
Soccer in the United States continues to grow, particularly as more young talents make their debuts abroad, as happened this Sunday in Germany, where Mathis Albert became the youngest American to debut in the Bundesliga.
For several years now, the Bundesliga has served as a development hub for American players, many of whom are recruited into academies at an early age. Albert is a clear example. At just 16-years-old, he made his debut in German football wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, on 21 May 2009, Albert joined Dortmund’s academy in 2024 at the age of 14. Despite receiving offers from other countries, including the Netherlands, he chose Germany due to his heritage. In addition to holding German nationality, his grandparents are from the country.
As mentioned, it has become increasingly common in recent years for German clubs to recruit young footballers from the United States. Albert’s case is not unique, but it is historic. The South Carolina native is now the youngest American to debut in the Bundesliga.
The previous record was held by Giovanni Reyna, who debuted for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 at the age of 17. That mark has now been surpassed by a player widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in American soccer.
It is also worth noting that Albert had already made his first-team debut for Borussia Dortmund during the 2025 Club World Cup. However, this appearance marks his first in the Bundesliga.
