All change at Boca Juniors as the Diego Martínez era begins

The official announcement of the new head coach at Boca Juniors was delayed until the end of 2023 when presidential elections saw Juan Román Riquelme emerging victorious. Other coaching candidates were Fernando Gago (who finally moved to Mexico to coach of Chivas) and Gaby Milito (who apparently has his sights set on a position in Europe) with the Xeneizes ultimately opting for Diego Martínez.

The 45-year-old has penned a two-year contract and has impressed in his time as Tigre boss when he secured a promotion to the top flight and helped the club reach a League Cup final during 2022 (losing to the same Boca 3-0) with the club qualifying for the Copa Sudamericana. He later joined Huracán and despite spending just a few months with ‘El Globo’ he managed to salvage the club from relegation.

Diego Martínez now arrives at Boca at the begging of an new era with the club set to be absent from the 2024 Copa Libertadores despite reaching the 2023 final against Fluminense.

The season ahead

The new coach is already busy working on the transfer market ans the club embarks on preseason activity. Martínez already knows some of the footballers who today make up the Boca Juniors first team but it’s clear that reinforcements will be drafted in after a number of disappointing years for the Buenos Aires giants.
