Alphonso Davies gives update on unhappy triad injury: “My whole knee’s f***ed”
The Bayern Munich full-back shares his experience while recovering from a serious knee injury, from surgery to where he stands now.

Alphonso Davies has opened up for the first time about the serious knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the best part of a year. The defender suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and meniscus - known in medical circles as the “unhappy triad”. It is by far the most severe injury of his career so far.
“My whole knee is f***ed,” he admitted candidly. “It’s very disappointing, but that’s the game we play - these things happen. That’s the season gone. I missed the Champions League, the quarter finals, the semi-finals. I’ll miss the Club World Cup as well. I think the next time I’ll be on a football pitch, playing a game, will hopefully be earlier than January - all depending on how quickly I can recover
“It was a bitter shock when they told me. I was really sad. I not going to lie, I wanted to cry. I held back tears. It’s sad, really sad. It’s just unfortunate it happened, the timing… but yet again, you can’t really control these things,” he added.

Davies documents knee injury recovery process
The Canadian defender shared his emotional journey in a nearly 20-minute video on his YouTube channel, which serves as a documentary-style account of his recovery process before and after surgery.
“The pain’s killing me,” Davies said after undergoing his operation. “It’s excruciating. It’s been a real eye opener. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. It’s going good, slowly but surely we’re getting there. Physically, it hurts, but mentally, it’s exhausting. I try to keep a positive energy.”
Despite his determination, Davies struggled to maintain that mindset throughout the entire recovery process. There were moments when frustration and doubt crept in, making the journey even more challenging. However, his openness about the emotional toll of rehabilitation offers a raw, honest look at the resilience required to overcome setbacks in professional sport.

Rehabilitation is tough, and Davies doesn’t shy away from admitting it. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster. “It was a rough night. I had a mental breakdown. I don’t know what happened. I had just taken a shower, and suddenly, I collapsed—I broke down. I started crying and panicked... I could barely sleep last night, struggling to find a comfortable position for my leg to rest,” the Bayern star shared.
Despite signing a major contract extension with Bayern, Davies still has months ahead before he can return to the pitch. But he’s committed to documenting the ups and downs of his journey, continuing to share his story with fans on his YouTube channel.
