Alphonso Davies wants Bayern salary increase, Madrid remain interested in left-back

The Canadian full-back will only sign for Bayern if he receives a salary increase; Madrid will go on the attack during the summer.

Bayern Munich will have to pull out all the stops if they want to keep Alphonso Davies and repel Real Madrid’s interest in their full-back. As revealed by the German newspaper Sport Bild, the Canadian, who is being eyed up by Real Madrid amongst other clubs, is asking for a considerable salary increase in order to sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena. If he does not appear in the highest salary bracket of the squad, which is around €15 million ($16 million) per season, the player will not renew his contract that expires in June 2025.

This is not the first time that the Bundesliga champions have tried to extend Davies’ contract. According to Sport Bild, Bayern offered him a total annual fee of €12 million at the beginning of the year, but negotiations stalled after the departure of the then-sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic.

Tuchel speaks about keeping Davies

Christoph Freund, the Bosnian’s successor as head of Munich’s sporting department, is now in charge of reaching an agreement with Davies, but things have changed: the player is now asking for more money.

Of course, Bayern will do everything possible to try to convince the player, who is without a doubt one of the most influential players in his position, especially as the German club know that Real Madrid is an enticing prospect for both him and his agent, Nedal Huoseh. It should be remembered that said agent even remarked the following in an interview with journalist Fabrizio Romano: “I do not want to undervalue Bayern, but Real Madrid and their 14 Champions League titles... I have always been a fan of that team and to hear that they are interested in a player you represent makes you proud”.

Thomas Tuchel, coach of the German club, also spoke on the matter recently, saying that Davies “is our player and is an undisputed starter. He knows that we appreciate him and for me, as coach, it’s simple: He’s in the right place, playing at the highest level every game. The contractual situation of the players has no influence on my work, that is taken care of by Christoph Freund (sporting director) and Jan-Christian Dreesen (CEO). I have every confidence that they will lay the foundations for everything to work.

Ancelotti wants Davies for next season

The summer of 2024 is guaranteed to be a big story, as the LaLiga club have their sights set on the full-back to reinforce and continue the lineage of attacking left-sided defenders who have played for Real Madrid over the last 30 years: Roberto Carlos and Marcelo. Madrid already know from the statements of Davies’ agent that the player appreciates the interest of Los Blancos, but when the time comes he will negotiate with Bayern, hoping for a reaction similar to what happened with Kroos in 2014.

During that summer, the midfielder refused to renew and had only one year left on his contract, so Bayern agreed to a transfer at a moderate price, just €25 million ($27 million). Madrid are aiming for something similar with the approval of Ancelotti, who has told the 14-time European champions that Davies is also his preferred option to reinforce the left-back position in 2024.
