Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara will square off for the first time in the Clausura 2023 in another edition of El Clásico Nacional on Saturday 18 March at Akron Stadium. This will be the third time that Las Águilas head coach, Fernando Ortíz, faces El Rebaño Sagrado since taking the job in March 2022.

Ortíz’s positive record against Chivas

The 45-year-old manager has a positive record against the Guadalajara-based side, with one win and one draw so far. When Ortíz replaced Santiago Solari in the Clausura 2022, his second match in charge was against Chivas at Akron Stadium and the game ended in a 0-0 draw, which was considered a decent result.

The second time Ortíz coached Los Azulcremas in the biggest game in Liga MX was on matchday 15 of the Apertura 2022. That match was played at Estadio Azteca and Club América defeated Chivas 2-1, with Henry Martín and Alejandro Zendejas finding the back of the net to give Ortíz his first Clásico Nacional win as head coach.

Big games have a big impact at América

In each tournament, Club América has to play three Clásicos and a negative run of results usually ends up with those in charge of the club making drastic decisions and sacking the manager in charge. For that reason, the game against Chivas is a very important one for Ortíz and Co because another positive results will strengthen the board’s trust and give the team he confidence it needs to achieve its main goal, which is winning the Liga MX title.

Following the Clásico Nacional against Chivas, Club América will play against Cruz Azul on matchday 15 on 15 April at Estadio Azteca. This derby is called the Clásico Jóven because of the recent rivalry that has developed between the clubs in the last decade. The other key matchup for Las Águilas is the Clásico Capitalino against Pumas UNAM that will be played on 22 April at Estadio Azteca.
