América’s start to the Clausura 2026 is historic - and not for the right reasons

Club America has made a poor start to the new Liga MX short tournament, drawing a blank in each of its first three games.

Update:

Club América has kicked off the Clausura 2026 with a negative milestone, failing to score in each of its first three matches. Goalless draws against Xolos and Pachuca, either side of a 2-0 loss to Atlético San Luis, have set off alarm bells in Coapa.

While goalless stretches have happened before, this poor start ranks among América’s worst in the last 25 years of the short‑season era. At the moment, América is the only Liga MX team yet to score after the first three rounds of the Clausura 2026. The struggles up front have been evident, compounded by key absences such as Alejandro Zendejas, Erick Sánchez, and Henry Martín.

After three matches, América has logged 270 scoreless minutes, a drought that’s ramping up the pressure on both the coaching staff and players. In the standings, América sits in 15th place with just two points - far from the league leaders.

Looking back at similar starts

A situation like this hasn’t unfolded since the Invierno 2001 tournament, when América also failed to score in its opening matches. That season began with a scoreless draw against Pachuca in Week 1 and a 2–0 defeat to Atlante in Week 2.

In Invierno 2001, that sluggish start came with serious consequences: América missed the playoffs, finishing ninth with 24 points. The question now is whether history might be repeating itself in the Clausura 2026.
