Update:

Ousmane Dembélé scored a 25-minute hat-trick as France beat Norway to top spot, while Senegal’s big win over Iraq means the Africans will join Group I’s top two in the World Cup knockout stages.

What happened on Group I matchday three?

Having both clinched last-32 berths on matchday two, France and Norway met in a showdown for first place - but it did not live up to its Kylian Mbappé-against-Erling Haaland pre-match billing. With qualification already in the bag, Norwegian boss Stale Solbakken opted to rest numerous starters, including Haaland and Martin Odegaard, in a decision he described postgame as a “no brainer”.

And Solbakken’s much-changed side was thumped 4-1 in Foxborough, where Dembélé netted three times between the seventh and 32nd minutes. Desiré Doué added a late fourth for France, whose head coach, Didier Deschamps, was absent after the death of his mother.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s first points of the 2026 World Cup were enough to take the Teranga Lions into the knockout stages. Following defeats to France and Norway on matchdays one and two, the Africans hit form against Iraq, firing in five unanswered goals to secure third in Group I.

Benefiting from an early red card for Iraq’s Rebin Sulaka, Senegal boosted their goal difference to +2 - a goal glut that ensured they will be one of the group stage’s eight best third-placed teams.
